BILLY BIBBY & THE WRY SMILES are the superb new musical endeavour of Billy Bibby, former and founding lead guitarist of Catfish and the Bottlemen. Bibby’s 7-year stint with Catfish began in 2007, culminating with the release of The Balcony, their Top 10 debut album, recently Certified Platinum in the UK. Billy and his new band are ready to do it all again.
Bibby’s latest musical journey began in the summer of 2014 in the same grass roots, DIY style that served him well in the past. Penning new tunes and trialling them in front of live audiences and via demos posted to SoundCloud garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. By 2015 Bibby was ready to transition once again to a full band experience and, with the help of Simon Jones of The Verve, auditions took place and a new four-piece ensemble of talented musicians emerged.
BILLY BIBBY & THE WRY SMILES are Billy Bibby/lead vox & guitar; Rob Jones/lead guitar & vox; Matt Bassy/bass & vox; Mike Pearce/drummer.
Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles released their first single, ‘Waitin’ for You’, and played their first live show in November of 2015 and it’s been nonstop ever since: a début EP Bide Your Time, singles ‘Are You Ready?’ and ‘Substitute’, an ever-expanding repertoire of live music, over 80 gigs and 10 festival appearances across the UK, and radio play on BBC Introducing, Radio X, Virgin Radio, Amazing Radio, and close to 100 stations in the UK and abroad.
2017 started strong with the release of the much-lauded single ‘Substitute’, instantly playlisted on Virgin Radio UK and BBC Radio Wales. Robust industry support in the form of two grants–a Horizons/BBC Launchpad win and funding from Arts Council of Wales–will allow Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles to release and promote even more new music as they tour relentlessly, winning over fans one at a time with their energetic, tuneful, and optimistic rock. Perhaps Tim Cocker of Virgin Radio summed up the band’s future best when he said, “This fella knows how to write a chorus that one day a crowd–a BIG crowd-will sing back to him.”
“Full of guts and life and love and a thoroughly persuasive belief in the redemptive power of music. You listen to that, it believes.” - Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales
“I just believe he’s got such a massive future. That classic sort of British songwriting with a strong nod to Americana.” - Clint Boon, Radio X
"A few true talents go on to outshine their ex-bands...Such a talent is Billy Bibby..." - Mark Beaumont, NME
“Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles do ‘their own thing’ and it is stunning. An impressive performance showcasing beautifully crafted songs.” – Desh Kapur, Rock at Night
"A superbly passionate pop/rock piece here that’s loaded with life and vitality." - Dave Simpson, Pure M
