Portland’s own The Noted
Releases CD Album
The core band includes Daniel Work: piano/keys/acoustic guitar/lead vocals, Jeff Koch: electric guitars, Mike Snyder: drums/percussion, and John Dwyer: bass/back-up vocals.
For this effort, they called in supporting musicians, Ben Haynor on acoustic/electric guitars, Marianna Thielen and Sue Ellen Hodnot on back-up vocals, and Myriam Gendron on cello.
"At This Moment" has 12 original songs and one hit cover ("a fun and musically literate” take — according to one reviewer — of the Hootie & the Blowfish hit, Only Wanna Be With You).
The CD is a just under 60-minute wonder of sounds ranging from progressive rock to indie rock and jazz with a hint of swing. Listeners will hear nods to Paul McCartney, Manhattan Transfer, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty and Five for Fighting that are blended into a unique sound only this band of four could deliver.
While most of the songs flowed from the pen of the group’s leader, Daniel Work, other talents have helped fine-tune the sound of The Noted.
Take Time, an instrumental jazz track, features Grammy winner Doug Smith on finger-style guitar; Move On, was co-written with Marv Ross, a Top Ten songwriter from Quarterflash (the 1980s Portland rock band); and I Am, was co-written by pop-rocker Jake Oken-Berg of The Retrofits, another native Oregonian.
The backroom of the band is also well-credentialed with mix engineer Bob Stark, of Portland & L.A. (Esperanza Spalding, Doug Smith, Steve Martin), who has four Grammy credits, and mastering by Steve Savage of San Francisco (BB King, Robert Cray) with his seven Grammy credits.
The best news is that The Noted is not just a studio band. They love livening-up local venues regularly with their performances.
These experienced musicians are single-handedly on a mission to create a sound that adds up to comfortably unpredictable, elemental rock.
The Noted is a band of fine craftsmanship and musicality, and their new CD, "At This Moment," is a showcase of their skill. "The One" takes its place among the best of love songs, and its tender lyrics are nicely complemented by music that both understates and emphasizes its sentiment. How is that possible? You'll just have to listen to find out. "Take Time," a (literally) snappy and immediately engaging work, is a welcome revival of the age of very cool instrumentals. "Only Wanna Be With You" is both fun and musically literate, a nice and very rare combination. The band's sensitivities to broad issues and perspectives are revealed in songs such as "More Than Alright" and "At This Moment."
