Artist Biography

David MacDonald Is a singer-songwriter from Amherst MA (stomping grounds for bands including DinosaurJr., Pixies, and Sebadoh). He currently records and releases music as COUCHBOY.
With alternative rock, punk, and classic pop influences, David crafts songs from a number of perspectives making the music of COUCHBOY sometimes unpredictable. Recent releases have harkened the sounds of 90’s grunge, 60's folk rock, jangly to psychedelic, punk to lo-fi inspirations-- but all with a signature sound and style.

Early influences were The Kinks, The Who, and other classic bands. At 15, he won an acoustic guitar in a Beatles trivia contest and taught himself to play from listening to records. Discovering punk and alternative rock, David played bass in many groups before forming JASPER in Chapel NC., recording a cd with producer Caleb Southern (Ben Folds, Archers of Loaf, Fear of Pop) and touring the east coast (including playing at SXSW and Richmond Music Festival) before moving to NYC with a production deal and performing throughout the city. David, the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, left the band and returned to Western Massachusetts where he has been recording music as COUCHBOY since August 2021.

COUCHBOY's June and July 2023 releases were "SUMMER", a nostalgic sounding indie tune with alt folk and pop flourishes, and "TREASON" an energetic power pop grunge tune. In July, he joined the artist roster of SUBJANGLE records with a 10 song CD "Singles and What Nots" being released from the label in August. The physical CD is currently sold out on BANDCAMP after 2 runs. COUCHBOY is included on the HOLY CRAP RECORDS compilations "Big Money" (July 2023) and "Ramonesesque" (March 2022), the START TRACK RECORDS compilations: "Start the Track Vol.3" (Sept. 2023) and "Vol.4" (Dec.2023), and on the ICE CREAM MAN POWER POP records compilation "A Sprinkle Of Summer Fun" (Sept. 2023). The most recent single “SECOND CHANCES” is out now with a new video posted on YouTube in Jan/ 2024, and the COUCHBOY Christmas song "Remember" was in recent holiday radio rotation and included on the START TRACK RECORDS Christmas compilation in Dec. 2023.

David is finishing up a 2nd CD for release on SUBJANGLE in the Spring and is putting a full band together for the coming year.

Press Release

Singer-songwriter David MacDonald won his first guitar in a radio Beatles trivia contest. He taught himself to play, and now, all these years later, he records and releases music as COUCHBOY. There may have also been something in the water! He is from Western MA ( DinosaurJr.,Pixies, Linda Perry, Staind, Sebadoh).

"Second Chances" is the new COUCHBOY release. Combining a 90's alternative rock sound with alt-country undertones, the song is a guitar driven, melodic rocker in the realm of early Wilco, The Lemonheads, and a bit of Rubber Soul era Beatles.

The acoustic guitar shines through the mix as the song progresses, eventually bursting into a layered solo section of electric guitars and solid drum riffs. All the while, the lyrics are about taking chances on a relationship gone sour.

This is the 3rd single leading up to a CD release on the SUBJANGLE records label in the Spring of 2024.

COUCHBOY's  Debut CD, "Singles and What Nots" came out on SUBJANGLE in the Summer of 2023 and is currently sold out. Couchboy was included on 5 record compilations in 2023 with several songs rotating on radio and playlists.Videos for many of the songs are on YouTube. linktr.ee/couchboymusic

“I write songs. I don’t really think about genre-- the song dictates how it should sound really. If it needs to be punky, jangly, or acoustic, etc...it just depends. I just try and stay true to a sound that is mine and hope it all fits together in the end.”--David MacDonald
